BRBX — Graduate Student Researchers/Academic Student Employees

The University of California employs approximately 12,603 Graduate Student Researchers (GSR) and 19,182 Academic Student Employees (ASE) across the system. GSRs, including Graduate Student Researchers, Fellows, and Trainees, play an important role in fulfilling UC’s research mission by conducting academic research in support of grant-funded projects. ASEs, who are primarily graduate students, provide instructional support as Teaching Assistants, Associate Instructors, Readers, and Tutors, supporting faculty by helping fulfill UC’s instructional mission.

The GSR/ASE bargaining unit is represented by the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) Local 4811 and is covered by a combined collective bargaining agreement.
