Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) at UC

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program is a federal program created for those in public service jobs, offering the opportunity to have their federal loan balances forgiven after 120 qualifying monthly payments.

The University of California (EIN: 94-3067788) is a qualified employer for the PSLF program. Generally, many full-time UC employees who otherwise qualify may be eligible to apply their months of employment towards PSLF.

To ensure as many eligible UC faculty and staff can take advantage of this program as possible, this page will be updated regularly with news and resources.

What do you need to submit?

You need to submit a separate employer designation (PDF form or e-Form) for each period of UC employment. Periods of UC employment may be considered separate because of breaks in service, changes in full-time status, location changes prior to UCPath conversion, and because your location converted to UCPath during the time you were employed.

If you worked at UC before and after UCPath was implemented, you will need to submit a one-time PSLF application for pre-UCPath data. You will also need to submit your annual PSLF application for your current UCPath data.

If you have only been employed by UC since UCPath was implemented, you only need to submit your annual PSLF application for your current UCPath data.

You will use the UCPath employer identification number (EIN: 94-3067788) for your current employment period and the EIN of your location(s) for the period prior to conversion to UCPath.

How to obtain the employer information and signatures you need

The process for getting the information and signatures you need depends on whether you’re a current or former UC employee, and on when you worked for UC.

Current employees

UCPath accepts PSLF e-forms submitted via DocuSign from the studentaid.gov PSLF site.

  • Use the PSLF Help Tool to complete the PSLF Application for Forgiveness.
  • If you were employed by UC prior to UCPath conversion at your location, you will need to submit separate employment verification for the pre-conversion data or enter two different employers in the PSLF eForm. You only need to verify your period of employment before your location converted to UCPath once.
  • Data about your employment after the conversion to UCPath should be submitted annually for PSLF tracking if you continue to be employed at UC and meet PSLF qualifications.

Former UC employees

Use the PSLF Help Tool to complete the PSLF Application for Forgiveness.

If you were employed by UC before and after your location converted to UCPath, you will need to submit two employment verification forms or enter two different employers in the PSLF eForm for the employment periods.

You may email your PSLF PDF Form and request to ucpath@universityofcalifornia.edu

Along with your request, please specify how and where to return the form.

Tips from UCPath to avoid delays

  • If you are submitting a paper form, complete page 1 of the fillable PDF form (sections 1 and 2) with borrower information ONLY.
    • Make sure you sign and date your PSLF form before submitting it to UCPath.
  • If you are submitting the PSLF eForm be sure to check that the employer address and EIN information is correct.
  • UCPath accepts PSLF eForms submitted via DocuSign from the studentaid.gov PSLF site. The email address for UCPath is ucpath@universityofcalifornia.edu. Please note: If employment information is incorrect on the PSLF eForm, UCPath will decline the DocuSign and send a secure email to the user with a PSLF PDF.
  • If you are or were classified as a variable paid employee, you must contact your campus location to complete the certification.
  • Ensure you meet ALL PSLF eligibility requirements; part-time employment does not meet the qualifications for loan forgiveness. Employees who average more than 30 hours per week are given credit for time worked at qualified employers.
