Dear Colleague,

In October, the university will begin negotiating with AFSCME over a new contract for you and your fellow patient care technical colleagues.

We recognize and appreciate the expertise you bring to our medical centers and campus student health centers. Our goal is to reach a long-term deal that guarantees market-competitive pay and benefits as well as safe working conditions. While we are absolutely committed to this, we must also carefully consider the university’s multiple budget priorities and long-term financial health.

Here is our commitment to you:

  • Pay that’s market-competitive: We routinely conduct market studies and provide regular pay increases to make sure our salaries stay competitive. We know market-competitive compensation is critical to our ability to recruit and retain skilled staff.
  • Quality health care for you and your family: We offer a choice of several excellent and affordable health plans for you and your dependents.
  • Continued excellent retirement benefits: All current employees will see no change in their pension benefits.

UC’s goal for future represented employees is to provide a choice between the traditional pension plan and a 401(k)-style plan, whichever they feel best fits their needs and preferences. Few employers offer this choice. Offering this choice to future employees will not affect the pension benefits of current employees; accrued pension benefits are protected by law and cannot be reduced or revoked.

  • A long-term contract: We will negotiate for a comprehensive, multi-year contract to provide you and the university with predictability and stability.

We will be sure to provide you with regular updates as negotiations get underway.

Thank you again for all you do for our patients, their families, our communities and to support UC’s public service mission.

Sincerely,

Dwaine B. Duckett

Vice President of Human Resources
