The University of California and the University Council-American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT) resumed bargaining on August 27 as the parties continued negotiations toward a systemwide successor collective bargaining agreement. The Unit 18 faculty bargaining unit includes approximately 5,314 non-Senate faculty across the UC system.
On July 15, UC and UC-AFT reached an agreement on a one-year contract extension through June 20, 2027. In the agreement, the parties committed to quarterly chief-negotiator progress meetings, permission for up to two additional bargaining team members to attend those meetings as observers, and a series of milestones designed to maintain momentum throughout the year.
During the August 27 session, the Union presented a number of articles, including Non-Discrimination, Academic Reviews, Review Criteria, Benefits, Immigration, and Resignation. The University presented revised leave proposals, including a reorganized Leaves of Absence article and a new, standalone Paid Sick Leave article.
As the parties continue working through a range of proposals, UC remains focused on constructive engagement at the table. Productive bargaining depends on a structured process that allows both parties to exchange proposals, ask questions, understand priorities, and work through complex issues in good faith.
The University remains committed to reaching a fair, sustainable agreement that recognizes the important contributions of Unit 18 faculty, supports high-quality teaching and learning, and advances the University’s mission of education, research, and public service.
The parties will resume bargaining on September 24.
