Dear colleagues,
I am writing to announce the appointment of Ralph J. Hexter as interim provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, effective September 1. He will serve until the University’s next permanent provost is appointed.
At a consequential time for higher education, UC needs experienced and steady academic leadership. Ralph understands the University, its public mission, and the importance of working closely with campus leaders, faculty, and the Academic Senate.
Dr. Hexter brings extensive academic and administrative experience. He served as provost and executive vice chancellor at UC Davis from 2011 to 2020 and as acting and interim chancellor from 2016 to 2017. Earlier, he was the executive dean of the College of Letters & Sciences at UC Berkeley. He also served as president of Hampshire College and held faculty and leadership positions at Yale University and the University of Colorado Boulder.
I am grateful that Ralph has agreed to return to UC leadership during this period. His experience and knowledge of the University will provide continuity as we advance UC’s academic mission and conduct the national search for our next permanent provost.
Sincerely,
James B. Milliken
President
