The University of California and the University Council-American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT) met on October 8 at UC Riverside to continue negotiations on a new systemwide contract for Unit 18 non-Senate faculty, who provide vital instructional services across UC.
During the session, UC-AFT presented proposals on Academic Responsibility, Professional Concerns, and Summer Session. UC presented proposals on Description of Unit Titles and Recognition, along with a counterproposal on Holidays. The parties also continued discussing UC’s previously presented proposals on Academic Year Appointments and Waiver.
The one-day, in-person session included testimony from UC Riverside lecturers and students about the impacts of layoffs and reductions in time, including the effect on health care eligibility.
UC is committed to reaching a fair, sustainable agreement that recognizes the important contributions of Unit 18 faculty, supports high-quality teaching and learning, and advances the University’s mission.
The parties will resume bargaining on November 5.
