UC and UC-AFT Reach One-Year Extension Agreement for the Unit 18 Faculty (IX) Bargaining Unit

The University of California and the University Council-American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT) continued bargaining on July 15-16 toward a systemwide successor collective bargaining agreement covering approximately 5,314 Unit 18 faculty across the UC system.
On the first day of bargaining, the parties reached agreement on a one-year contract extension through June 30, 2027, together with a 4% salary adjustment for Unit 18 faculty. In the extension agreement, UC and UC-AFT committed to quarterly chief negotiator bargaining progress meetings, permission for up to two additional bargaining team members to attend those meetings as observers, and milestones designed to maintain momentum throughout the year.
On July 16, UC passed proposals on Union Rights and Online Instruction and heard testimony from lecturers on topics including workload, compensation, affordability, and related concerns. The Union passed a counterproposal on Holidays, requesting paid leave for additional personal cultural and religious holidays, which UC countered the same day with options for leave that align with existing University policy.
The University remains committed to reaching a fair, sustainable agreement that recognizes the important contributions of Unit 18 faculty, supports high-quality teaching and learning, and advances the University’s mission of education, research, and public service.
The parties plan to reconvene in August.
