Medicare Coordinator Program

Administered by Via Benefits

UC sponsors a Medicare Coordinator Program (MCP) for Medicare-eligible retirees and families who live in a state outside of California.

How the program works

This program offers retirees and their covered family members:

  • Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) account funded by UC
  • More local plans, including Kaiser, where available
  • Choice of plans to fit medical needs and budget
  • Flexibility for family members to choose different Medicare plans
  • Personalized support from Via Benefits

Who’s eligible

Retirees and all covered family members must meet all eligibility requirements below:

  • Live in a state outside California
  • Eligible for and enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B
  • 65 years of age or older
  • Eligible for UC retiree health insurance

You are not eligible for the Medicare Coordinator program if you or any covered family members are under the age of 65, even if the covered individuals are eligible for Medicare due to a health condition or disability. You will become eligible when all covered family members reach the age of 65 and meet the eligibility requirements. At that point, the family must transition from UC group plans to Medicare plans through Via Benefits.

You are not eligible for the Medicare Coordinator program if you elected to receive the lump sum cashout of your UCRP benefits when you retired.

Before you move

Moving outside California as a retiree who is eligible for Medicare could mean big changes for your benefits. Here’s how to prepare:

Do not reach out to Via Benefits before you’ve notified UC of your move. UC and Via Benefits must connect first to ensure Via Benefits has the information it needs to set up your Health Reimbursement Arrangement.

Depending on the time of the year you notify UC of your new address, within a month you’ll receive:

  • A Via Benefits Enrollment Guide with information on what to expect and how to best prepare for your enrollment
  • Phone calls from Via Benefits customer service representatives to answer any initial questions you may have

Contact the UC Retirement Administration Service Center (RASC) if you believe you are eligible for the Medicare Coordinator Program and did not receive an enrollment packet from Via Benefits, or if you received an enrollment packet but you do not believe you are eligible.
