The University of California (UC) and the United Auto Workers (UAW) began negotiations on May 5 for the initial contract for the Communications, Marketing, and Sales Professionals – UAW Bargaining Unit, also known as “ComMaS.” The CM-UAW unit was formed last fall and certified by the state Public Employment Relations Board in March.
The new bargaining unit represents approximately 1,600 employees across the UC system in a range of positions, including Acquisitions Editor, Communications Specialist, Digital Communications Specialist, Marketing Specialist, Media Communications Specialist, Program Representative, Publications Production Specialist, Sales Specialist, Visual Communications Specialist, and Writer/Editor. These valued employees contribute to UC’s mission by coordinating strategy and producing and sharing information about the institution’s services, programs and mission.
During the one-day bargaining session, the University passed an article covering Ground Rules. The Union passed a comprehensive package proposal as well as articles on Ground Rules and Subcontracting.
UC and UAW-CM will meet regularly in the coming months to reach a mutually beneficial agreement for this newly formed unit.
The parties will resume bargaining on June 2.
