The California Legislature is considering the California Science and Health Research Bond Act (SB 895), a proposal that would place a $12 billion research bond before voters and create a long-term funding source for scientific and medical research across the state.

UC has never faced this level of uncertainty around research funding. More than $1 billion in federal research funding remains at risk, threatening discoveries, jobs, and educational opportunities across California.

The good news is that SB 895 is making progress. The bill has already passed the California Senate and continues to advance through the Assembly. But the legislature only has a short window left to decide whether Californians will have the opportunity to vote on this investment in research and innovation.

As President James B. Milliken stated in his Sacramento Bee opinion piece: “No one anywhere else in the world does scientific discovery better than UC faculty. Our research is an economic engine for the state, supporting tens of thousands of good, local jobs. It propels our state’s global leadership in innovation. It delivers life-changing and life-saving medical advancements for people everywhere.”

Now is the time to act: Email your lawmakers to ask for their help ensuring SB 895 reaches the November ballot.
