It’s been a busy and memorable month throughout the University of California: We’ve been topping the charts with a round of accolades that touches every location.
Applause-worthy graduate programs
The 2023-24 U.S. News Best Graduate Schools rankings found what we already knew: Across nearly any field imaginable — business, education, engineering, law, medicine and nursing, along with specialties in each area — UC offers some of the best graduate schools and programs in the country. You can explore the ranking highlights here. And, an extra gold star goes to UC Davis’ veterinary school, which continued its 12-year streak at the top.
Acing the arts
Three UC alumni received 2023 Pulitzer Prizes — one of the most prestigious honors in journalism, literature and music composition. Hua Hsu was honored for “Stay True,” which recounts his coming-of-age on the UC Berkeley campus in the 1990s. Jefferson Cowie was recognized for “Freedom’s Dominion: A Saga of White Resistance to Federal Power,” a history book that outlines the role of white supremacy within the concept of American freedom. Sanaz Toossi won for “English,” a play focusing on Iranian students who contemplate the possible outcomes of translating themselves into a new language. Learn more about the artists and prizes.
Leading globally in academic excellence
After evaluating nearly 20,000 universities around the globe, the Center for World University Rankings ranked all 10 UC campuses among the top 4%. Seven UC campuses ranked among the top 30 public universities in the U.S., with four in the top 10; these seven campuses also stood among the top 50 of all U.S. universities, public and private. Diversifying graduate business education
UC’s Summer Institute for Emerging Managers and Leaders, aka SIEML, recently received a 2023 Inspiring Programs in Business Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, a prestigious national publication focused on diversity, equity and inclusion in higher ed. As Pamela D. Jennings, UC’s executive director of Graduate Studies, said, “UC is expanding the talent pipeline and helping create a new generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs that reflect the full diversity of California itself.” Learn more about this unique program.
A historic achievement
On June 1, UC Riverside was invited to join the Association of American Universities, or AAU — the eighth UC campus to be judged by its peers as meeting the highest standards for research and educational excellence. As UC Riverside Chancellor Kim Wilcox said, “This is an historic moment for UC Riverside; one of the greatest achievements in campus history.” Find out what this accreditation means.
