The University of California and the University Council – American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT) continued negotiations on March 19 for a systemwide, successor collective bargaining agreement for approximately 5,265 Unit 18 faculty across the UC system.

During last week’s bargaining session, the University passed current contract language (CCL) proposals on Academic Calendars, Past Practice, and Travel, as well as proposals on Academic Year Appointments and Waiver. UC-AFT presented a proposal on Academic Freedom, a top bargaining priority for the Union.

Overall, the session was substantive and productive, with both sides exchanging initial proposals and establishing additional bargaining dates through the summer.

UC-AFT faculty members play a significant role in delivering instruction and supporting students’ academic experience across the University of California, and UC is eager to reach a fair and sustainable agreement that supports high-quality instruction, strengthens the institution’s academic enterprise, and ensures instructional programs are delivered in ways that best serve students.

The next bargaining session is scheduled for April 9. The current contract expires June 30, 2026.
