A message to Service and Patient Care Technical employees

Your work matters — you deserve pay increases, not another strike.

Service and patient care technical employees play a vital role in supporting UC’s mission, and have been working without a contract for the past two years. Now, AFSCME is again asking union members to strike. This is the sixth time in two years AFSCME has asked members to strike. Striking is serious, and impacts the critical services we know you take great pride in delivering to the people who depend on you. It also costs you money in lost wages. Attached is important information for you about striking, including your right not to.

Your co-workers have contracts. We want you to have one too.

As the chart below shows, since UC began bargaining with AFSCME in April 2017, UC has settled 10 contracts covering more than 56,000 employees. UC’s offers to AFSCME will guarantee service and patient care technical staff the same fair pay increases and excellent benefits as other employees.

UC’s offer is fair — you deserve to vote on it.

Pay

Service: 3-3.5% annual across-the-board increases for the next 5 years + step increases

PCT: 3% annual across-the-board increases for the next 5 years + step increases

Health Benefits

The same health insurance rates as other employees, plus a $25 cap on monthly increases for Kaiser and Health Net Blue & Gold plans.

Retirement Benefits

New bargaining unit employees will receive the same pension benefits as current AFSCME-represented employees. 


We understand your concerns about subcontracting and layoffs.

UC’s contracts with AFSCME provide significant protections against job losses, even when subcontracting may be needed. UC cannot lay off any AFSCME-represented employee due to a subcontracting decision, or use contractors for bargaining unit work for the sole purpose of saving money on employee wages and benefits.

AFSCME membership is growing.

Did you know that AFSCME-represented positions have grown significantly? In the past five years, service employees have increased by 17% and patient care technical staff have grown by 28%.
