On April 15, the UCOP Native American, Indigenous and Pacific Islander Staff Association (NAIPISA) and OP Staff Assembly (OPSA) hosted a conversation with Greg Sarris, UC regent and chairman of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, moderated by Katherine Newman, UC provost and executive vice president of Academic Affairs.
During the event, Regent Sarris talked about his journey as an author, inspirations, work as a tribal leader and leadership role as a UC regent.
Crystal Wahpepah, founder of the local restaurant Wahpepah’s Kitchen in Fruitvale, showed her appreciation for Regent Sarris by sharing stories and presenting him with a gift card to her restaurant. To learn more about Crystal and her restaurant, watch the April 12 episode of CBS Saturday Morning’s “The Dish.”
Joining UCOP colleagues for this event were Angel Riotutar, director of the American Indian Resource Center (AIRC) at UC Santa Cruz, and her coordinator, Alexa Jobe. Angel and Alexa are regular NAIPISA meeting attendees and were instrumental in helping to plan this event.
