On Monday, May 26, UC Office of the President employee resource group Veterans Among US brought 14 members, colleagues and family members together to recognize Memorial Day by paying tribute to the lives of local deceased service members.
Along with local community members, they gathered at Riverside National Cemetery to participate in the annual “A Flag for Every Hero” event, through which volunteers decorate each veteran’s grave with an American flag. This year, Riverside volunteers placed more than 260,000 flags.
This event has become a tradition for VAUS members, who have participated since 2021 — before they were even an official employee group.
“Memorial Day weekend is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have given everything to uphold our way of life,” said VAUS Chair Mark Romo. “As we placed flags at the graves of our veterans, it was a powerful reminder that Memorial Day is not just a holiday, but a sacred reminder to honor those who have paid the ultimate price. It’s a moment to reflect on their courage and service, as well as the values of liberty and sacrifice that continue to shape our nation.”
