UC San Diego Health and UCSF Health recognized as health systems leading in AI

Becker’s Healthcare, in partnership with the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for Health Innovation at UC San Diego, recently recognized UC San Diego Health and UCSF Health as leaders in artificial intelligence — a distinction granted to only 11 health systems nationally.

In a celebratory article, authors noted, “These organizations are not only conducting transformative research but are also demonstrating tangible patient benefits from AI applications. Their success is characterized by a deliberate focus on ethical implementation, ensuring that AI technologies are used responsibly and effectively.”

UC San Diego Health highlights

Karandeep Singh, M.D., Joan and Irwin Jacobs endowed chair in digital health innovation, UC San Diego School of Medicine, and inaugural chief health AI officer at UC San Diego Health, was recognized for “leading the development and implementation of AI-driven solutions that enhance clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.”

Christopher Longhurst, M.D., chief medical officer and chief digital officer of UC San Diego Health and executive director of the Jacobs Center for Health Innovation, was praised for leading “groundbreaking initiatives that drive positive change in the digital healthcare landscape, ultimately helping to improve the patient experience.”

UCSF Health highlights

Sara Murray, M.D., inaugural chief health AI officer and associate chief medical information officer was commended as “a visionary leader in health informatics, digital health, and data science,” and for leading “the creation of robust infrastructure and governance processes to deploy impactful and ethical AI solutions.”

Bob Wachter, M.D., Chair of the Department of Medicine and author of “The Digital Doctor,” was recognized for chairing workgroups to examine the impact of AI on patient safety and as “a fierce advocate of the transformative potential of generative AI in health care.”
