Landscape Superintendent Mario Casanova is a familiar face with deep roots in the UC Davis landscape — both literally and figuratively. With over 12 years at UC Davis — including two as a student employee with the sports turf crew — his journey from student employee to leadership role highlights a true commitment to campus and community.

Mario has grown alongside the Arboretum and Public Garden’s Grounds and Landscape Services team. From summer stints with the irrigation team to advancing through the ranks as groundskeeper, lead gardener and country crew supervisor, his steady progression reflects his passion, hard work, leadership abilities and the vibrant energy he brings to the role. “It’s been a rewarding path,” he shares. “Each step has helped shape the way I lead today.”

As landscape superintendent, Mario now oversees the housing and laborer crews, supports event operations, manages temporary employees, leads the department’s pesticide program and collaborates closely on safety initiatives. “There’s always something new,” he says. “No two days are alike, and that keeps the work exciting.”

He admits that one ongoing challenge is staffing shortages, which place extra pressure on the team. “We do our best to support each other, but it’s definitely tough at times. Still, the sense of teamwork here is strong.”

That team spirit is one of the things Mario values most about being part of Facilities Management. “Ever since our team joined Facilities, I’ve felt welcomed and supported. It’s the people that make this such a great place to work.”

Off the clock, Marios life revolves around family, food and the outdoors. Whether he’s camping with his wife and two kids, Tomas and Lyra, catching a baseball game or cooking up Mexican dishes to share his culture, he finds joy in the simple pleasures. “Being outdoors and making memories with the people I love — that’s what it’s all about.”
