Mi Doctor/a Habla Español: Raising the Bar for Language Equity Health Care
Sept. 19, 12 – 1 p.m. (PT)
Language is a social driver of health. Conducting language equity research requires expanding beyond the historically static “limited English proficient” variable to a multidimensional construct that is dynamic and relational. To do this, we must account for clinician language skills as well as patient language preferences. This presentation, led by Pilar Ortega, M.D., will discuss a novel language equity framework as well as recent advancements in language proficiency assessment through the Physician Oral Language Observation Matrix (POLOM) for medical Spanish certification. Join us for a discussion featuring Dr. David E. Hayes-Bautista, distinguished professor of medicine and the director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He has spent 40 years working to improve public understanding of Latinos and their health, history, culture and contributions to California and the nation. The State of the Latino Community

Brent Hales, associate vice president for Research and Cooperative Extension, will lead a conversation celebrating the contributions of UC ANR Latino professionals. Maite Arce, president and chief executive officer of the Hispanic Access Foundation will address the state of the Latino community, including their economic impact and ongoing challenges. Closing the Gap: Advancing Latinx Representation in Healthcare
