The coronavirus outbreak has brought about many challenges — not in the least, school closures that are leaving parents to step into the role of substitute teachers. If you’ve found yourself in this position, don’t miss these helpful educational resources from throughout UC.

UC Scout

For UC Scout, which offers free online college prep courses to California public school students and teachers, delivering state-of-the-art remote instruction is business as usual. This program provides the full range of courses needed for admission to UC and CSU, known as the A-G requirements, plus 26 Advanced Placement classes. It was created to ensure all California students could get the classes they need to be eligible and competitive for college, even if their high school didn’t have those offerings. Now, it has become a valuable resource for students and schools transitioning overnight to remote instruction. Get started with UC Scout.

UC Berkeley

 “Chatting-in-Place” video series: Tune into the latest COVID-19 developments and other science research taking place across campus from UC Berkeley scientists in short videos. 

The Lawrence at Home: UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science offers a website filled with science-centric family-friendly activities, including DIY projects, animal facts, science demonstrations, shows and more.

Community Resources for Science (CRS) videos: The Bay Area-based CRS typically brings scientists (many of whom are UC Berkeley graduate students) to schools to teach kids about science and build enthusiasm. During the pandemic, some UC Berkeley students are creating videos of their classroom presentations — some of which are available in Spanish.

UC Davis

The California History-Social Science Project: Engaging home-school lessons include an oral history toolkit, reading lists and student journal assignments.

Women’s Resources and Research Center (WRRC) Radical Readers Story Hour: Every Wednesday at 11 a.m., join the WRRC on Facebook for live readings of contemporary children’s stories. Catch “Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos” on May 27.

MIND Institute — autism resources: In addition to a roundup of teaching and coping resources to support families with children on the autism spectrum during the COVID-19 pandemic, the MIND Institute released a helpful video of Home-schooling tips for families with autism.

UC Irvine

Teacher Academy: This site provides a helpful roundup of online educational and other COVID-19 family resources.

UCLA

Center X: Center X usually focuses on supporting and instructing public school teachers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has released a comprehensive overview of how to teach from home, as well as targeted lessons in math, science, history, geography, reading and literature.

UC San Diego

Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC) and Mesa Child Development Center (MCDC) Virtual Classrooms: This site contains a variety of resources for children up to age 5, including many child-focused videos that use storytelling to explain life during the COVID-19 pandemic.
