UC and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) met Feb. 27-28, 2013 in Davis to continue bargaining a new contract for about 8,300 service employees. The university was very disappointed that AFSCME did not present any counter proposals, which hindered the parties from making progress toward an agreement.

The university presented proposed terms for parking, layoffs and seniority in the event a future staff reduction is needed, and wages which includes a 2 percent step increase effective July 1, 2013. The union rejected the university's earlier proposal on contracting out, and did not present any other proposals of its own.

The university is committed to constructive and efficient negotiations culminating in a new agreement, which expired on Jan. 31, 2013. UC hopes AFSCME shares this commitment and that the union will present more proposals on contract terms in a timely manner for discussion.

The next scheduled bargaining session is for late March. The university and union will finalize the date and location soon.
