UC and UAW Continue Contract Negotiations for Student Services and Advising Professionals and Research and Public Service Professionals

On October 29, the University of California and the United Auto Workers (UAW) continued negotiations to establish an initial contract for the Student Services and Advising Professionals (SSAP) unit. UC and UAW also began negotiations for the newly created UAW-represented unit, Research and Public Service Professionals (RPSP). Starting with this week’s session, the University and UAW will now negotiate new contracts for these units at the same bargaining table.

The Research and Public Service Professionals unit includes about 7,000 employees across the UC system. Some focus on data collection and analysis; others manage research and public service programs, including grant administration. Some work in research centers and institutes, while others are in academic departments and labs.

During this week’s session, UC passed proposals on Union Access and Rights, Union Security, and Leaves for Union Business. UAW passed proposals on Leaves of Absence, Childcare, and Recognition, and the parties reached a tentative agreement (TA) on the RPSP Recognition article.

As the University of California system continues to experience financial pressures, we remain committed to bargaining in good faith to reach a fair, sustainable agreement. UAW and UC are working together to develop balanced solutions that support both the institution’s mission and its employees’ well-being.

The next bargaining session is scheduled for November 14.
