The University of California met with the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 4811 union on July 22 to continue negotiations for a new contract for Graduate Student Researchers (GSRs) and Academic Student Employees (ASEs)

During the July 22 session, UC presented a proposal to retain the current contract language for ten articles, along with three additional proposals that detailed contract article language regarding discipline and dismissal, as well as grievance and arbitration procedures. Also, UC re-passed their proposal on employment files from July 8.

UAW presented six proposals to UC this week regarding union access and rights, union security, workspace and instructional support, leaves of absence, workload, and paid time off (PTO).

Meetings will continue on a bimonthly basis to negotiate contract terms, with the UAW and UC exchanging proposals and counterproposals until a mutually beneficial agreement is reached. Negotiations are anticipated to continue through 2025. The current contract expires on Jan. 1, 2026. The next bargaining session is tentatively scheduled for August 12.
