The University of California continued bargaining with the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 4811 union for a new contract for the BR/BX unit, which comprises Graduate Student Researchers (GSRs) and Academic Student Employees (ASEs).
During the session, UC presented a package proposal on Management & Academic Rights and No Strikes, along with proposals on Grievance & Arbitration and Definitions.
UAW passed a package proposal on Respectful Work Environment and Non-Discrimination, and additional proposals on Immigration, Childcare and Union Access & Rights.
To date, the parties have reached tentative agreements on eight articles.
UC places a high priority on ensuring fair contracts for academic student employees and graduate student researchers. As a result of federal funding cuts and broad financial pressures, university teaching and research missions have been severely compromised. Therefore, bargaining must focus on constructive solutions to protect students, patients, and the university community.
The two parties are scheduled to meet again on October 28.
