UC and UAW Continue Negotiations for BR/BX Contract

The University of California continued bargaining with the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 4811 union on August 19. The two parties are negotiating a new contract for Graduate Student Researchers (GSRs) and Academic Student Employees (ASEs).
During this week’s session, UC presented three proposals: on immigration, reasonable accommodation, and discipline and dismissal. UAW presented three proposals regarding GSR paid time off, parking and transit, and housing. As bargaining proceeds, each party continues to review proposals, make counteroffers, and elevate relevant issues for discussion.
UC values the essential contributions of academic student employees and graduate student researchers and is committed to working together with the UAW to reach a fair contract, even as we navigate recent federal policy changes that have sharply reduced research funding and other financial challenges for higher education institutions nationwide.
The two parties will meet again on Wednesday, September 3.
