UC Continues Negotiations with CNA for Registered Nurses Contract

The University of California continued contract negotiations with CNA on October 29-30, in an effort to reach an agreement before the nurses’ contract expired on October 31. In light of the difficult economic conditions affecting people across the country—and the significant impact the ongoing federal government shutdown is having on food and income security—UC remains deeply committed to developing meaningful and compassionate proposals to support our workforce in these uncertain times.

CNA has previously rejected many of the University’s offers, including a proposed contract extension and a wage proposal valued at $1.1 billion, which equates to a 27% salary increase over five years. See details of those offers here.

During the sessions, the University passed proposals on Bargaining Unit Positions, Benefits, Holidays, Bargaining Unit Class, Corrective Action/Discipline and Dismissal, Positions, Per Diem, Nondiscrimination, and Staffing. CNA submitted counterproposals on Recognition, Health and Safety, Wages, Vacation, Education, and Layoff and Reduction in Time. The union also passed package proposals on association Rights and a Professional Practice Committee.

In these sessions, the parties reached six tentative agreements (TAs) covering Recognition, Professional Practice Committee, Association Rights, Positions, Vacation, and Corrective Action/Discipline and Dismissal.

The University remains committed to bargaining in good faith while navigating Federal funding cuts and broader financial pressures that have severely compromised the university’s teaching and research missions and its health centers. The two parties will meet again on November 5.
