Negotiations Continue for Registered Nurses Contract

The University of California continued negotiations with the California Nurses Association (CNA) on September 3 and 4 for a successor contract for registered nurses across the UC system.

During the sessions, UC passed proposals that included language on new technology, education and professional development, work rules, management rights, and counterproposals on probationary periods, recognition, performance evaluation, and unit classification.

CNA passed three initial proposals on staffing, job posting, and hours of work, two counterproposals on corrective action and new technology, and a package proposal agreeing on current contract language (CCL).

UC deeply values the dedication and expertise of the nurses who provide essential care across its health centers and is committed to fostering a fair and supportive workplace. At the same time, ongoing financial pressures, workforce shortages, and rising operational costs continue to challenge the University’s ability to sustain its mission. These realities make it increasingly important that bargaining efforts focus on constructive, balanced solutions that ensure stability for patients, staff, and the broader UC community.

The next bargaining sessions are scheduled for October 1 – 2.
