On September 30, the University of California continued bargaining with the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 4811 union for a new contract for Graduate Student Researchers (GSRs) and Academic Student Employees (ASEs).
During the session, UC presented proposals on immigration, respectful work environment and non-discrimination.
UAW passed proposals on leaves, grievance and arbitration and union security in addition to sharing a proposed panel of arbitrators. To date, the parties have reached tentative agreements on eight articles.
A fair contract for academic student employees and graduate student researchers is a priority for UC. University teaching and research missions are severely compromised due to federal funding cuts and broad financial pressures. Thus, it is vital that bargaining focuses on constructive solutions that protect students, patients, and the university community.
The two parties are scheduled to meet again on October 14.
