Summer is a great time for concerts, festivals, travel and outdoor fun. A few simple habits can help you stay aware and feel more prepared in busy spaces.
1. Look around when you arrive
Take a moment to get familiar with your surroundings. Notice the nearest exits, where staff or security are stationed and where you could move if an area becomes too crowded. This quick check can help you feel more confident and prepared.
2. Trust your instincts
If something feels off, pay attention. You do not need to explain or justify your reaction. Move to a safer spot, find other people or ask for help before a situation has a chance to escalate.
3. Keep your distance from conflict
If someone is yelling, making threats or acting aggressively, avoid engaging. Stay calm, keep your voice low and give yourself space to leave. Walking away early is often the safest and simplest choice.
4. Make a plan for crowds
Before heading into a busy event, choose a meeting spot in case your group gets separated. Keep your phone charged and stay near aisles, exits or open areas when possible. If a crowd starts to feel unsafe, leave before it becomes harder to move.
5. Stay alert while traveling
Use well-lit, populated areas whenever you can, especially at night. Confirm rideshare details before getting into a car and be thoughtful about sharing personal information in public. Small steps can make travel feel smoother and safer.
6. Know how to report concerns
If there is an immediate threat, leave the area as soon as it is safe. Call or text 9-1-1 when emergency help is needed. Once you are safe, check in with the people you are with and follow instructions from emergency personnel.
