President Milliken marks his first year at the University of California

UC President James B. Milliken shared the following message with UC staff and retirees on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Dear colleagues,

A year ago, I arrived at the University of California with deep admiration for its history, accomplishments, and far-reaching impact. After visiting campuses and meeting the faculty, students, health professionals, and staff who bring UC’s mission to life, that admiration has only grown. I’ve seen extraordinary expertise matched by a shared determination to expand opportunity, advance discovery, improve lives, and serve California.

This has also been a consequential year for higher education. Universities face significant challenges, from federal actions and budget constraints to declining public confidence and rapid technological change. Yet I remain optimistic. Record enrollment, groundbreaking research, exceptional patient care, and the recognition of UC scholars on the world stage are powerful reminders of what this university can accomplish when talented people work toward a common purpose.

As we prepare UC for a changing future, I am inspired by the shared purpose I see throughout the university. This first year has given me an even greater appreciation for the people behind UC’s remarkable accomplishments, and I’m grateful to be part of this extraordinary community.
