The Health and Dependent Care (DepCare) Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) both let you save on your taxes by taking pretax money from your paycheck each month to cover certain expenses. They have different rules and deadlines, though, and a big one is coming up: April 15, 2025, is the deadline to file claims for your eligible 2024 Health, Limited Purpose and DepCare FSA expenses.
Understanding FSA rules and deadlines
Health FSA
The Health FSA allows you to pay for qualifying medical expenses for you and your eligible family members.
Claims for 2024 expenses must be filed by April 15, 2025. If you don’t use all your contributions for expenses incurred in 2024, up to $640 of your balance will be carried over automatically to use in 2025, and any funds over $640 will be forfeited. Balances less than $25 as of December 31, 2024, have been forfeited if you did not re-enroll in the Health FSA for 2025.
You do not need to be enrolled in the Health FSA for 2025 to access funds carried over from 2024.
Limited Purpose FSA
You may have a Limited Purpose FSA if you moved to UC Health Savings Plan in 2024 and had a balance in your 2023 Health FSA. Claims for 2024 expenses must be filed by April 15, 2025. There is no carryover provision for Limited Purpose FSA balances. Any unused balance will be forfeited.
DepCare FSA
The DepCare FSA allows you to pay for eligible expenses for the care of your child (up to age 13) or eligible adult dependent while you work.
There is no carryover feature in the DepCare FSA. However, the plan has a grace period, which means that unused funds contributed in one plan year can be used for the reimbursement of claims incurred through the grace period of the following year (as long as you were enrolled in the plan on December 31 of the initial plan year). For 2024 DepCare FSA participants, the grace period ended on March 15, 2025.
Claims for expenses incurred in 2024 and during the grace period of January 1 – March 15, 2025, are due by April 15, 2025. 2024 contributions not claimed by April 15, 2025, will be forfeited.
