Sept. 22, 2021: This article has been updated with an extension to the deadline for bringing vacation accruals below the maximum.

With travel plans put on hold due to the pandemic, the vacation accrual maximum in UC’s Absence from Work policy (PPSM-2.210) was temporarily lifted last year to allow policy-covered staff more time to use their accrued vacation leave to bring their accrual below the maximum. That temporary change has been extended through June 30, 2022, by President Michael V. Drake, M.D.

This change applies to policy-covered staff at locations other than Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Policy-covered staff who earn PTO should refer to their location’s PTO program for eligibility information. This does not apply to represented employees.

How it works

The extension is applied automatically through UCPath. If you are eligible, you will continue accruing vacation leave through June 30, 2022, even if you are over your usual maximum accrual. Starting Oct. 1, 2021, policy-covered staff who are over their maximum vacation leave accrual limit — and who have already been provided with at least an additional four months within which to take vacation leave during the temporary change approved by President Drake — will no longer accrue additional vacation leave until they bring their vacation leave balance below their maximum.

Policy-covered staff should refer to the Absence from Work Policy (PPSM-2.210) regarding accrual of vacation leave. Section III.B.5 of the policy describes the maximum vacation accrual limit and the extension that is allowed per policy under certain circumstances.

Please note: To find your maximum accrual, log into your UCPath Online account at ucpath.universityofcalifornia.edu, then select Employee Actions > Leave Balances. Your maximum vacation accrual is displayed at the bottom of the chart.
