University of California Health’s academic health centers (AHCs) have been at the forefront of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even during these challenging times, the teams at our AHCs have maintained their focus on the quality and safety of care for patients. The results of an annual national study show that three of our AHC’s are among the best in the country for quality and safety.
The 2020 Vizient Quality and Accountability study ranked UC Irvine Health, UCLA Health and UC San Diego Health in the top 13 academic medical centers from among 100 AHCs across the country.
“Quality and safety are the foundation for our work to improve the health of communities across the state. Our academic health centers are committed to meeting robust quality and safety benchmarks while always pursuing continual improvement,” said Dr. Carrie L. Byington, executive vice president of UCH and an infectious disease expert.
UCH hospitals’ quality and safety programs use a dashboard of metrics to monitor and improve results. That work resulted in the following rankings:
- UC San Diego Health’s hospitals in La Jolla and Hillcrest ranked seventh nationally and have been recognized two consecutive years as a top performer. In addition to being ranked in the top 10 nationally, UC San Diego Health was ranked fourth in the safety domain which represents exceptional performance at reducing health care associated infections.
- UC Irvine Health’s Medical Center ranked eighth nationally in Vizient’s assessment this year, achieved top performer status and earned a five-star ranking.
- UCLA Health’s Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center is ranked 13th, and earned top performer status and a five-star ranking. UCLA Health Santa Monica Medical Center is also in the top 20 in this year’s results.
Vizient’s Quality and Accountability program assesses a hospital’s performance in six areas: safety, mortality, clinical effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and equity.
