Contract Negotiations Continue for the Newly Formed Research and Public Service Professionals and Student Services and Advising Professionals Bargaining Units

The University of California and the United Auto Workers (UAW) continued bargaining negotiations Dec. 16-19 to establish an initial contract for the newly formed Student Services and Advising Professionals (SSAP) bargaining unit. During this session, UC and UAW also engaged in negotiations for an initial contract for the newly formed, UAW-represented, Research and Public Service Professionals (RPSP) unit. UAW was certified as the exclusive representative of the RPSP unit on September 15, 2025, after a union election. UC and UAW are now negotiating both of these new contracts at the same bargaining table.

During four days of bargaining last week, UC and UAW both passed significant proposals on Appointments, Definitions, Discipline and Dismissal, Hours of Work, Immigration, Layoffs, Leaves of Absence, Non-Discrimination in Employment, Offer of Employment, Parking and Transportation, Performance Evaluation, Reasonable Accommodation, Respectful Work Environment, Sick Leave, Technology, Transfer and Promotion, Travel Reimbursement, Vacation, and Workload. Tentative agreements reached by the parties include articles that cover Performance Evaluation and Travel Reimbursement. The proposals and tentative agreements covered both the SSAP and RPSP units.

As the University of California system continues to experience financial pressures, we remain committed to bargaining in good faith to reach a fair, sustainable agreement. UC and UAW continue to work together to develop balanced solutions that support both the institution’s mission and its employees’ well-being.

The next bargaining session is scheduled for Jan. 7, 2026.
