UC and UAW Continue to Make Progress on RPSP and SSAP Bargaining Negotiations

The University of California and the United Auto Workers (UAW) continued bargaining negotiations last week (Jan. 21-23) on initial contracts for the Student Services and Advising Professionals (SSAP) and the Research and Public Service Professionals (RPSP) bargaining units. Both of these new contracts are being negotiated at the same bargaining table.
During three days of bargaining, UC and UAW passed substantial proposals on Grievance and Arbitration, Reclassification, Resignation/Job Abandonment, Transfer/Promotion, Union Access and Rights, Union Security, and Work Incurred Illness and Injury. The parties reached a tentative agreement on Work-Incurred Injury and Illness, bringing the total number of tentative agreements to 16, a positive sign of steady progress and collaboration.
UC was advised earlier this month that UAW is preparing to hold a strike authorization vote in February. We are encouraged by the continued progress we are making at the bargaining table, and we strongly disagree with UAW’s characterization that the University is bargaining in bad faith or acting unlawfully. The Union’s strike authorization vote at this stage is premature, unnecessary, and risks diverting focus from the meaningful progress being made at the bargaining table. Read our full statement here.
The next bargaining session is scheduled for Feb. 2.
