Contract Negotiations Progress for the RPSP and SSAP Bargaining Units

The University of California and the United Auto Workers (UAW) continued bargaining negotiations last week (Jan. 7-9) on initial contracts for the Student Services and Advising Professionals (SSAP) and the Research and Public Service Professionals (RPSP) bargaining units. UC and UAW are negotiating both of these new contracts at the same bargaining table.
During the three days of bargaining, UC and UAW passed detailed proposals on Appointments, Grievance and Arbitration, Layoff and Reduction in Time, Leaves for Union Business, Non-Discrimination in Employment, Probationary Period, Reasonable Accommodation, Respectful Work Environment, Sea Pay Compensation, Transfer/Promotion/Reclassification, Wages, and Work-incurred Injury and Illness. The parties reached tentative agreements that cover both bargaining units on Nondiscrimination in Employment, Respectful Work Environment, Reasonable Accommodation, and Leaves for Union Business. The two parties have reached tentative agreements on 15 articles/appendices for the bargaining units, a positive sign of progress through good faith bargaining and collaboration.
Earlier this week, UC was advised that UAW would hold a strike authorization vote next month. While we are encouraged by the progress we are making at the bargaining table, we are disappointed by this news. UAW’s strike authorization vote at this stage is premature, unnecessary, and risks diverting focus from the meaningful progress being made at the bargaining table. Read our full statement here.
The next bargaining session is scheduled for Jan. 15.
