UC and UAW Begin Negotiations for New Contracts for Student Services and Advisory Professionals

The University of California began negotiations on July 9 with the United Auto Workers (UAW)
union for a collective bargaining agreement for the newly formed Student Services and Advisory Professionals (SSAP) unit. As a represented employee, your benefits, wages, and specific workplace procedures will be negotiated through the collective bargaining process. When establishing a new unit, UC must consider differing campus locations, departments, and operations. The University’s primary objective is to reach an agreement that supports and furthers our workforce and UC’s mission.

Before bargaining, the two parties agreed on ground rules and selected some bargaining dates and locations, alternating between Northern and Southern California. UC presented five proposals for UAW to review, including articles covering health and safety, management rights, grievance and arbitration, discipline and dismissal, and no strikes.

The UAW team presented five individual proposals to UC on modality, recognition, conversion of appointments, grievance and arbitration, and modality, as well as a package proposal addressing non-discrimination and a respectful work environment.

The two parties will continue to meet bimonthly to work through the contract terms, exchanging proposals and counterproposals until they reach a mutually beneficial agreement. The next bargaining session is scheduled for July 23.
