UC and CIR-SEIU Continue Systemwide Medical Resident Negotiations

On August 19, the University of California and the Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU (CIR-SEIU) continued negotiations for a systemwide medical resident contract. As you know, a systemwide contract — unlike the local agreements that have previously governed medical residents — offers an opportunity to create consistent standards across UC. Both UC and the union are committed to ensuring that this new contract is implemented effectively and includes provisions that advance the interests of both parties.

During this week’s session, UC presented proposals on work stoppages/no strikes, resident well-being, recognition, program closures, and ground rules. CIR-SEIU presented a counterproposal regarding the language on program closure and reiterated its position on ground rules limiting the number of observers at bargaining sessions. In a sign of their willingness to successfully collaborate, the parties reached a tentative agreement on work stoppages and no strikes.

Bargaining sessions will proceed on a regular schedule, with the next session scheduled for Thursday, September 11.
