November Update: UC and CIR-SEIU Continue Negotiations for Systemwide Medical Resident Contract

The University of California and the Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU (CIR-SEIU) continued negotiations for the first systemwide contract for medical residents. Below is a summary of proposals passed during the last three bargaining sessions held on October 27, November 6, and November 18.

UC ProposalsLabor-Management Meetings, Housing Allowance, Resident Lounges and Call Rooms, and Program Closure. 

UC shared counterproposals on Union Access & Rights (combined Access, Employee Lists & Orientation, and Release time), Program Closure, Commitment to Inclusivity, and Non-discrimination.
Union Access and Rights, Non-discrimination, Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Program Closure.UC shared counterproposals on Arbitration, Grievance Procedure, Labor-Management Meetings Management/Academic Rights, Waiver and Moonlighting.   
 CIR-SEIU Proposals Management and Academic Rights, Liability and Malpractice Insurance, Grievance Procedure, Waiver, Arbitration, Payroll Deduction, Program Closure, Resident Lounges and Call Rooms, and Health benefits
 Program Closure Grievance Procedure, Program Closure, Union Access and Rights

Both the union and UC have committed to negotiating this first systemwide contract for Medical Residents in ways that advance both parties’ respective interests and promote the sustainability of the medical academic programsThe next bargaining session is scheduled for December 2.
