The University of California and the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR-SEIU) continued bargaining on Jan. 20 for the first systemwide contract for medical residents. During the bargaining session, UC and CIR passed a series of counter proposals. The University passed Arbitration, Grievance Procedure, Management & Academic Rights, Union Access & Rights, and Payroll Deduction as a package proposal. CIR responded with its own counter on the same package proposal. Significant progress was made on this package proposal, and the parties commended each other during the session for the movement made on both sides.

Medical Residents play a vital role in advancing UC’s work and contributing to the provision of patient care. Both the union and UC have committed to negotiating this first systemwide contract for Medical Residents in ways that advance both parties’ interests and promote the sustainability of the medical academic programs. The next bargaining session is scheduled for Feb. 3.
