A message from President Napolitano
Dear Colleagues:
As you prepare to file your state income taxes this year, I wanted to let you know about an opportunity to help University of California researchers in the fight against cancer and type 1 diabetes.
UC administers two highly-regarded cancer research funds and one type 1 diabetes research fund on behalf of the State of California. The Research Grants Program Office manages the donations to fund research that focuses on prevention, treatment and the survivability of these diseases.
All donations, no matter the size, make a difference, and 95 percent of contributions go directly to research and education efforts. If you’d like to support this important work, you can do so when you fill out California’s 540 Income Tax Return form. It includes a section that lists funds to which taxpayers may contribute:
Line 405 supports the California Breast Cancer Research Voluntary Tax Contribution Fund. Since its inception, the fund has supported more than $12 million in breast cancer research. A recent grant, for example, is developing a new treatment for triple negative breast cancer that is based on variants of the anti-diabetes drug metformin.
Line 413 supports the California Cancer Research Voluntary Tax Contribution Fund. Donations are used to advance research to prevent, treat, and cure all types of cancer. A recently funded prevention education trial teaches high school students to attain and maintain healthy lifestyles that reduce cancer risk.
Line 435 supports the Type 1 Diabetes Research Voluntary Tax Contribution Fund. Donations are used to support research on how lifestyle factors, such as smoking and marijuana use, affect the quality of life of youth with type 1 diabetes.
Together, we can help UC researchers and others across California in the quest to end cancer and type 1 diabetes.
