For decades, the University of California has been a global hub for research on climate change and sustainability. Every day, UC scientists and researchers — with the support of dedicated staff — are developing new innovations to help Californians meet the challenges of the climate crisis. Our campuses and medical centers also continue to achieve new milestones as we work together toward our ambitious institutional sustainability goals.

Now, the state of California is partnering with us to further accelerate this work. The 2022-23 state budget, finalized in June, includes a $185 million investment in UC’s trailblazing research on climate change. This vital funding will provide seed and matching grants for promising climate research, expand regional innovation incubators, and support climate-related entrepreneurship. Leveraging our expertise in climate action, this support will build resilience in California communities as we work to mitigate the impacts of a warming planet.

I’m deeply grateful for the state’s partnership as the University continues to pursue transformative climate solutions rooted in environmental equity and justice — and for the staff, faculty, and students of UC who are committed to this important cause. Together, I know we can build a better, more sustainable world for the next generation.

Michael V. Drake, M.D.
UC President
