Universities nurture and advance the very best in us. They can help each individual live up to their fullest human potential. Through teaching, scientific research, innovation, and service, higher education has helped power our entire nation, and rendered the United States a global leader in so many fields. The University of California is a shining example of the best of universities. Our incredible impact is felt throughout the world.

Arriving as a 21-year-old medical student, my ambitious plan was to finish school and set up a solo private practice. This was the only model I knew. A future that included residency, a march through the faculty ranks, and opportunities to serve as Vice President, Chancellor, and President were beyond my imagination. The journey has been filled with opportunities to work with the outstanding students, faculty, and staff who are the heart of our university, and the privilege of representing UC to the wider world. There have been challenges along the way, but the difficulties have always been counterbalanced by a collective belief that we can and will find solutions to our most pressing problems. And we have.

Even today, as we travel a road mottled with uncertainty, I remain optimistic about our future. Just this week, for example, we announced that, for the first time, we’ve sent offers of admission to more than 100,000 aspiring California undergraduates. Our university is larger, stronger, and more resilient than ever. I leave my post grateful for the support and encouragement that Brenda and I have received from thousands of you over the years. Thank you for that, and for all that you do to serve the University of California and the world. As we move together into the future, Let There Be Light.

Sincerely,

Michael V. Drake, M.D.
UC President
