You may have seen the news: In order to pass a balanced budget in 2025-26, California Gov. Gavin Newsom had to make some tough choices. That includes a proposed 7.95% cut, or $396 million less, to the University’s base budget and the deferral of our 2025-26 compact funding.
A cut to the University’s funding will jeopardize our progress and hurt California students.
We’re talking about real consequences for our students: Fewer course offerings, bigger classes, and reductions in vital academic support services — changes that can impede a student’s ability to graduate on time. A cut in funding could also mean impacts to University operations, impacts that are contrary to the values we hold close: protecting staffing levels and ensuring our workforce remains thriving at UC with growth opportunities, and fair compensation for all.
Lawmakers need to hear that the UC community is engaged and paying attention.
