UC Health goes behind the scenes at Bonn

The main meeting space at the Bonn Climate Change Conference.

From June 5 – 15, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change hosted a climate change conference, SB58, in Bonn, Germany. The conference came on the heels of a recent UN report confirming that the Earth will warm 1.5° C above pre-industrial temperatures within the next five years. The Bonn discussions were a critical step in preparing for COP28, which is considered to be the most significant climate gathering since the 2015 Paris Agreement.

The delegates assembled in Bonn represented climate experts and thought leaders from around the world. Attending as observers for UC were UC Center for Climate, Health and Equity’s Founding Co-Director Arianne Teherani, Ph.D., and Managing Director Sapna Thottathil, Ph.D. They attended the Bonn discussions to understand whether and how impacts on human health and well-being were being represented and how international leaders were responding to the news that climate change is accelerating.

To help the UC community gain an understanding of the critical and sometimes nuanced developments taking place in Bonn, Drs. Teherani and Thottathil set up a blog site, featuring daily posts with detailed descriptions of what they learned and their perspectives of the conversations that were taking place.
