Series Concept

Accelerator Mechanical Technicians supervise or perform the maintenance, repair, rebuilding, installation and servicing of mechanical, pneumatic, vacuum, cooling, and hydraulic systems of one or more major particle accelerator equipment and associated experimental equipment; assist the professional staff in the de$ign and fabrication of varied experimental apparatus; assist researchers in a combined effort with accelerator operators and electronic technicians in diagnosing systems problems and making repairs or modifications required for accelerator operations; and perform other related duties as required.

This series differs from the Laboratory Mechanician series. Positions in this series require skills in diversified mechanical systems operations and maintenance work using the machine shop as auxiliary equipment, whereas positions in the Laboratory Mechanician series require skills in machine fabrications in a shop setting.

Class Concepts

Principal Accelerator Mechanical Technician

Under general supervision, incumbents perform all mechanical system operational servicing, repair and maintenance associated with the cyclotron; determine budget requirements; plan and schedule machine maintenance and servicing; maintain control of financial, equipment, personnel and material resources; plan for preventative maintenance programs and proposed equipment modifications; and supervise a technical staff by assigning duties, reviewing work requirements and work perfonnance.

Senior Accelerator Mechanical Technician

Under supervision, incumbents perfonn any type of mechanical system serv1c1ng, repair and maintenance associated with the cyclotron. In an operations group, incumbents support the experimental use of the accelerator and its associated equipment; and assist in the management of a machine shop, supervising the use of machine tools fabricating scientific apparatus, and maintaining inventory, ordering and stock control of parts.

Accelerator Mechanical Technician

Under supervision, incumbents assist higher level Accelerator Mechanical Technicians in performing mechanical system servicing, repair and maintenance associated with the cyclotron.
