Accelerator Operators supervise or operate complex particle accelerator devices and associated equipment; make experimental setups as required; record and analyze experimental data; and perform other related duties as required.

Class Concepts

Supervisor of Accelerator Operations

Under direction, incumbents direct and supervise the equipment operation of a particle accelerator. Incumbents typically plan work schedules for the accelerator’s operational personnel and supervise the work of Principal and Senior Accelerator Operators responsible for the operations of each shift; participate in scheduling decisions relating to beam time; implement the beam schedule as appropriate; determine equipment, supply and service needs for efficient operation; approve operational plans for difficult experimental setups; and coordinate with researchers, academic staff members, and/or electrical and mechanical personnel to insure that operations considerations are met in the design, installation and testing of new equipment components, and in the development of programs for computer analysis.

Supervisors of Accelerator Operations are distinguished from Principal Accelerator Operators in that incumbents have the overall supervisory responsibility for the equipment operation of,a n,uclear physics laboratory installation which includes major acc~lerator devices and associated equipment.

Principal Accelerator Operator

Under general supervision, incumbents serve as working supervisors of a team or shift of personnel operating a particle accelerator and associated equipment. Principal Accelerator Operators supervise an operating crew on a continuing basis by scheduling, assigning, and reviewing work; perform difficult experimental setups for a wide variety of research experiments, and perfonn or direct the most difficult tasks in the operation and servicing of complex particle accelerator devices; assist in the design of new equipment and direct its installation; may reduce and interpret complex data; and may assist in writing programs for computer analysis.

Principal Accelerator Operators are distinguished from Senior Accelerator Operators in that incumbents are assigned continuing supervision of a team or shift of personnel consisting of two or more accelerator personnel and/or associated mechanical or electrical personnel.

Senior Accelerator Operator

Under supervision, incumbents operate complex particle accelerator devices and associated equipment at the operational level of skill; perform experimental setups as required; and record and analyze experimental data. Typically, incumbents operate and service control and monitoring circuits for energizing, activating, or regulating magnets, vacuum systems, ion sources, etc., in the overall operation of an accelerator; advise and assist supervisors and researchers when non-routine mechanical or electrical difficulties arise; perform debugging and trouble shooting; assist in or carry out the beam phase of experiments; and advise researchers on the limits of accelerator use.

Senior Accelerator Operators are distinguished from Accelerator Operators in that incumbents perform at the operational 1evel of skill.

Accelerator Operator

Under supervision, Accelerator Operators assist in the operation of particle accelerator devices; and provide technical assistance in debugging and trouble shooting complex research apparatus.

This is the entry level wherein incumbents typically assist in operating and servicing, according to prescribed instructions, control and monitoring circuits for energizing, activating, or regulating magnets, vacuum systems, ion sources, etc. in the overall operation of an accelerator; reduce and interpret research data; and determine faulty operational developments.

Minimum Qualifications

Supervisor of Accelerator Operations

Completion of two years of college majoring in physics, engineering, or electronic technology, or completion of an advanced military electronics school, and eight years of experience in the operation of complex nuclear physics research equip ment including major accelerator devices; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Principal Accelerator Operator

Completion of two years of college majoring in physics, engineering, or electronic technology, or completion of an advanced ~ilitary electronics school, and five years of experience in the operation of complex nuclear physics research equipment including major accelerator devices; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful perfonnance of the duties assigned to the position.

Senior Accelerator Operator

Completion of two years of college majoring in physics, engineering, or electronic technology, or completion of an advanced military electronics school, and three years of experience in the operation of complex nuclear physics research equipment including major accelerator devices; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; arid knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Accelerator Operator

Completion of two years of college majoring in physics, engineering, or electronic technology, or completion of an advanced military electronics school; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
