Incumbents typically work under the direction of a professional Medical Record Administrator and perform a variety of technical assignments In one or more areas of a campus medical record program. Medical Record Technician positions are distinguished from positions in the Medical Record Administrator series in that Medical Record Administrators typically have responsibility for planning and directing the activities in one or more areas of a campus medical record program. Medical Record Technicians provide technical support to the Medical Record Administrators, however, technicians are expected to operate relatively independently within the scope of given assignments.

Medical Record Technicians collect, analyze and code medical information in accordance with the requirements of federal, state and local laws, the standards prescribed by accrediting and regulatory agencies, the data needs of physicians, researchers, students and administrators, and information requirements of patients, attorneys, insurance firms and governmental agencies; compile a variety of statistical reports requiring quantitative and qualitative analysis of medical records; and assist Medical Record Administrators as required in the development of medical information systems.

The Medical Record Technician series consists of two levels with the distinction between levels based on the scope and complexity of the medical record keeping functions performed.
