SERIES CONCEPT

Tumor Registrars identify, register, and maintain records of all cancer patients by using a tumor registry data system. Analyzes data and releases information in adherence to established ethical standards. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures relative to Tumor Registry.  Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Typically reports to a supervisor.

Essential elements of Tumor Registrars positions are: (1) a complete working knowledge of the applicable medical terminology; (2) an in-depth understanding of the meaning and organization of patient record; (3) an understanding of the relationship between patient records and the service to be provided to groups and governmental agencies; and (4) analysis of the patient record.

CLASS CONCEPTS

Tumor Registrar III

Under direction, incumbents perform non-supervisory duties requiring the highest level of skill and complexity described in the series concepts.

In addition to the requirements for an extensive knowledge of medical terminology and understanding of patient records, positions at this level may require special skills or knowledge in several areas, such as coding, data abstracting, reporting and submission to accrediting bodies, and English composition. Non-supervisory positions at this level require extensive analysis and problem resolution skills.

Tumor Registrar IIIs works cooperatively with the manager, Cancer Committee Quality Coordinator, and departmental staff to assist in the implementation of the Cancer Registry Quality Control Plan and Cancer Registry Policy and Procedures.  Incumbent ensure the data quality/integrity and data control methods are enforced, consistently maintained and evaluated for accuracy regarding malignant and benign processes for the cancer database (CNExT) pursuant to the established standards.

Tumor Registrar II

Under general supervision, incumbents perform non-supervisory duties requiring a high level of skill and complexity.

Non-supervisory positions at this level differ from Tumor Registrar III positions in that they involve less varied types of skills and less complex work than is required of the Tumor Registrar III class. The Tumor Registrar II class may be used for positions in which the incumbent has reached the advanced operational level of capability in work requiring complex skills in a limited variety of areas.

Tumor Registrar IIs screens, identifies, collects and enters cancer specific data into the computerized cancer data systems for all reportable neoplasms within UCI Health System in accordance with the standards of the California Cancer Registry, American College of Surgeons, and NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program (SEER).

Tumor Registrar I

Under supervision, incumbents perform duties primarily of a non-supervisory nature requiring a moderate level of skill in work requiring interface in a limited variety of areas.

Tumor Registrar Is identifies and uses all available follow-up resources while maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards to determine patients’ most current date of last contact, vital status and disease status for each patient in the Cancer Registry in accordance with standards of the American College of Surgeons (ACOS), Commission on Cancer and the California Cancer Registry (CCR).  Duties include generating monthly computer follow-up control list, reviewing medical records, generating letters or making phone calls to patients, doctors, or relatives and searching public databases to gather follow-up data to update status in the computerized Cancer Registry System.  Other duties include follow-up correspondence, back-up phone coverage, and assisting in casefinding, ordering medical records, coordination of Tumor Board Conferences and other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Tumor Registrar III

Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma; Tumor Registrar certification (CTR) by the National Cancer Registrars Association: a minimum seven years’ cancer registry abstracting experience in a hospital setting;  demonstrated knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, and medical terminology; and demonstrated knowledge of coding guidelines and requirements.

Tumor Registrar II

Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma; Tumor Registrar certification (CTR) by the National Cancer Registrars Association: a minimum one years cancer registry abstracting experience in a hospital setting;  demonstrated knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, and medical terminology; and demonstrated knowledge of coding guidelines and requirements.

Tumor Registrar I

Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma with a demonstrated aptitude for or knowledge of the applicable medical terminology; and previous clerical experience, including data entry and retrieval.
