Series Concept
Dentists supervise and/or perform professional and scientific work in the field of general dentistry; and perform other related duties as required.
Dentists may make oral and X-ray examinations; perform the full range of restoration procedures; diagnose and treat mouth diseases; instruct patients in oral hygiene; perform dental extractions or operations; prescribe and fit dentures; prepare and keep clinical records; perform dental prophylaxis; participate in staff conferences; and assist in the instruction of students.
The Diplomate classes are used when incumbents possess a valid certificate issued by an American specialty board and are required to use this specialty in the work assigned.

Senior Dentist Diplomate
Senior Dentist
Under general direction, incumbents serve as working chiefs or heads of a large dental service. In addition to performing the duties outlined in the Series Concept, Senior Dentists plan, organize and direct a comprehensive dental program; supervise the work of professional and ancillary dental staff; estimate future requirements for dental equipment and supplies; coordinate the dental program with other institutional programs; prepare administrative reports; preside at consultative or clinical conferences; and arrange, as necessary, for consultation on difficult cases with dental authorities outside the hospital.
Associate Dentist Diplomate
Associate Dentist
Under general direction, Associate Dentists perform the full range of duties as outlined in the Series Concept. This is the operational level; and incumbents are experienced dentists.
Assistant Dentist
Under supervision Assistant Dentists perform many of the duties outlined in the series concept. The class is for entry level positions and is reserved for persons, who, while assigned responsibility for professional tasks, receive supervision and to some extent are in a learning capacity.
Minimum Qualifications
Senior Dentist Level
Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of dentistry in California as determined by the California Board of Dental Examiners; at least two years of professional dental experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Associate Dentist Level
Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of dentistry in California as determined by the California Board of Dental Examiners; at least one year of professional dental experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Assistant Dentist
Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of dentistry in California as determined by the California Board of Dental Examiners, and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
