Class Concept

Upon request, incumbents consult with staff physicians on difficult or unusual cases requiring specialized medical knowledge and procedures. Incumbents in these positions are specialists in their fields called in to assist the regular medical staff in diagnosis, treatment, and surgery. They may also have responsibility for the regular and continuing medical care of the patients for whom they provided consultation. Consulting Physicians may also have regular responsibilities in a postgraduate or postdoctoral training program including work with interns, residents and fellows.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a license issued by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance to practice as a physician or surgeon; certification as a diplomate of a specialty board or its equivalent in numbers of years of practice in a specialized field exclusive of internship; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
